Does Being Overweight Cause Acne?

By Acne Free | October 22, 2007

Acne is a common skin disorder with serious social repercussions. Many studies have been conducted, hoping to isolate a particular cause in the hopes of finding preventive measures and better treatment. Although these studies have been able to establish correlations between certain factors such as diet and weight and acne; none have been able to prove a direct relationship.

One popular myth debunked by these studies is that being overweight causes acne. Studies show that overweight people actually enjoy clearer skins than healthier or slimmer people. The closest link there is between weight and acne is improper diet. An improper diet disrupts the body’s system in several ways. This disruption may or may not lead to being overweight; it also increases the possibility of acne. Being overweight does not cause acne; like acne, it is an effect of an unhealthy diet and lifestyle; it is a mere symptom of an unhealthy internal system.
