Emotional Effects Of Acne

By Acne Free | July 2, 2006

Although acne can be treated and does not appear to have any significant negative impact on one’s health, the condition can give rise to emotional consequences that are just too important to consider. Aside from the physical manifestations of acne, studies have shown that acne patients also tend to have a lower self-esteem and more negative self-image than their clear-faced counterparts.

Most acne patients describe their feelings about themselves as “ugly” and “dirty”, feelings that make them feel “angry” and “depressed”. The responses have shown to be consistent no matter the acne patient’s age, gender or social status. Adolescence is a difficult period by itself but coupled with acne, can be especially trying.

Adults who develop acne are not immune to the feelings of insecurity that accompanies the condition either. This can lead to an lack of confidence social situations.

One thing you have to realize is that you can control how acne effects you. You can choose to not let it bother you, and I can assure you that you will think it’s much worse than the people arround you do.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t try to treat your acne - just don’t let it bother you.
