What Causes Acne
By Acne Free | May 24, 2008
Acne is a condition that requires a consistent skin care regimen to keep it under control, but that doesn’t mean you need to continue applying strong chemical products to your newly healthy skin. The goal is now to keep your skin free from excess oils and replace harsh treatments with a more gentle routine that will maintain the results you have achieved.
Acne is formed due to a buildup of sebum (what we call oil) within the follicles of the skin. When this oil builds up, a small impaction is formed and oxygen can no longer enter the follicle. This allows the propioniumbacterium acnes, which are a cause of acne, to grow, and a lesion develops. This bacterium is anaerobic, which means that it cannot function in the presence of oxygen.
