What To Do About Baby Acne
By Acne Free | October 18, 2007
Baby acne is also known as neonatal acne as it can appear at birth or several weeks after. Hormones passed on from the mother to the baby while the baby is still in the placenta sometimes cause it. In most cases baby acne is normal and is nothing to worry about.
It will disappear in a few weeks, or when the baby reaches four to six months. It may look worse when the baby cries or is exposed to other irritants like a hot and humid weather or strong fabric detergents. Parents should be cautioned not to put anything on their baby’s skin, particularly that part affected by acne. Never apply creams or oils, or even baby powder as it may just irritate the baby’s skin further. While neonatal or baby acne is harmless, do have your baby checked up by a doctor when the baby becomes fussy or gets unreasonably irritable with the acne.

If your child experiences an outbreak of baby acne, there’s no reason to panic. Acne neonatorum is actually a rather common problem in infants. Nearly 1 out of 5 babies will experience some form of baby acne during their infancy. Since scarring is not an issue, your first priority should be your baby’s comfort.
In an attempt to conceal outbreaks, many parents will try applying various lotions and oils to their baby’s face. You should avoid this temptation and instead use a very mild soap and warm water to cleanse your baby. In many cases, the use of lotions can actually aggravate and prolong the condition.
