The Best Diet for Acne
By Acne Free | August 15, 2007
When it comes to our health the food which we eat that can often make a world of difference. Our diets affect our weight, our risk of cancer, our risk of heart disease and our risks of developing diabetes to name but a few problems. However, it is also known that acne, both on the face and body acne, can also sometimes be affected by the foods which we eat. So what exactly is the best diet for acne and which foods should we be avoiding?
How Foods Affects Acne
Now the main food which people associate with acne is chocolate. However, there is no proof whatsoever which links acne to chocolate. If anything it is thought to be the stress which you go through feeling guilty after you have eaten chocolate which could cause an outbreak. The main cause of acne relating to food seems to be food allergies.
If you have any food allergies then that could well be making your acne problem worse. This is because when you are allergic to food, it often causes a breakout of acne and we may not even realize that we have the allergy in the first place. Now whilst every single person is different, most people find that their food allergies relate to dairy products. So it could be that you are prone to acne outbreaks after eating cheese, after drinking milk, or after eating yogurt. Again, everyone is different and it can be hard determining what is causing your food allergy.
Knowing Which Foods Are Causing Your Allergies
The best way to see which foods are causing your acne is to make a diary of when you seem to break out in spots. Write down which foods you have eaten recently and see whether a pattern emerges. You should be able to see whether your problem is a certain type of food or whether it is one food in particular. It could take a while but it is certainly worth looking into if it could help to stop your acne break outs.
Even with a food diary, it could still be difficult finding out which foods are setting off your allergies and which ones aren’t.
This is because the symptoms of food allergies can vary in the time that they take to develop. Some can appear hours after you have eaten the food, whilst others can appear days afterwards. This makes it incredibly difficult to know exactly which foods are causing your acne to flare up and that is why many people do not find out the cause of their acne flare ups.
Overall there are no particular foods which you should stop eating. Obviously eating too many fatty foods such as chips, pizza, chocolate and crisps can be really bad for your health, but they do not necessarily cause acne breakouts. It is your own individual food allergies which could cause your acne problem and most people have an allergy to at least one type of food.

I used to hate when people would tell me to “don’t eat that, it will make your acne worse”. No matter how I changed my diet, I was still breaking out. Of course if I ate junk food versus healthy food I would break out more but that’s just a general health issue.

I find that eating chips, doritos, and cheese makes me break out.
If I stick to plain pasta and baked chicken, my complexion is fine, also lots of vegetables.

here is just some advice, i have had acne for ten years, and not just a little bit, but uncontrollable. Despite the theory that food and acne are not related i HIGHLY disagree, food is what keeps our body going and our skin is our biggest organ. Eat raw foods (fruits vegi’s WHOLE grain-vitamins and minerals) no milk or dairy( i have recently turned vegetarian six months ago and the difference is black and white) i dont suffer at all any more

Yeah. I would agree with the raw food diet. Even if you don’t eat raw food entirely, it makes a huge difference. I have had acne for years, I used retinal A, benzoil peroxide, tetracycline ect. all of which cost too much money..I found that in most cases bP worked but lately it doesn’t so for the last 2 weeks I’ve going crazy with the diet. For starters I only drink tea and water and some fruit juice. I am even trying to stay away from beer and wine lol thats a tough one. In the morn I eat an apple (organic), and red river cereal with pumpkin seeds sunflower seeds Brazilian nuts walnuts hazel nuts macadamia nuts raisins ..literally a mix of seeds and nuts in and some yogurt to cool it down for eating with blueberry, black berry and raspberry on top. its the most satisfying thing ive ever made for myself, and trust me I love bacon and eggs and coffee! For lunch and dinner I come up with HOME MADE salad and salad dressing mostly just tons of garlic in and oil and balsamic vinegar a little mustard makes a good dressing ingredient, all natural stuff though. And then I have been eating salmon and for snacks I eat home made hummus or guacamole, outside of that I haven’t been eating anything else and my god I’ve found the cure for acne!! and I’m not eating mammals lol I feel bad for the fish but they are very good for us.

I agree. I try to stick to eating healthy foods and drink only juices, milk, and water. Eating foods that are not greasy and bad for you does help acne. Whatever food you digest is what you are made out of and is what your body absorbs. If you eat healthy food, your body will become more healthy, and your skin it part of your body. Like the old saying goes “You are what you eat.”, and I believe that is the truth. For anyone who would consider this as a method of getting rid of acne I would say go for it. What is there to loose other than your acne. And you just cannot expect food to just cure your acne, there are many other factors that lead to acne. Eating healthy is just ONE WAY to improve your skin, and is an all natural way of dealing with it. All natural is always the best way to go about acne, chemicals and medical treatments are not always the best way.
