Genital Acne: Everything That You Need to Know

By Acne Free | July 10, 2007

Although it is not really talked about very often, genital acne is an irritating problem which affects many people. It can be extremely uncomfortable and it is classed as one of the hardest types of acne to treat.

Now despite what you may think, genital acne does not only affect the genital area, it mainly also affects the shoulders, back, face, chest and neck areas. This is because whilst it is mainly a genital problem, it is also caused by the exact same thing that causes acne on other parts of the body. So whilst genital acne does refer mainly to acne on the genital area, technically it is exactly the same as acne anywhere else on the body, it is just a little more frustrating and painful due to its position.

How to Treat Genital Acne

Firstly you need to be absolutely sure that the problem which you have is genital acne. To do this you need to see a doctor as until you get the problem diagnosed, it could be a number of other things including a sexually transmitted disease. Then once the doctor has diagnosed the problem, you should then think about the best ways to treat the problem.

In order to treat genital acne, it would be a help to know exactly what is causing it to occur. Some common problems include sweat and washing detergent. So think about all of the times that you do exercise or when you sweat a lot in your genital area. Do you wash straight afterwards to remove the sweat? If not then your pores could easily become blocked and that can irritate the acne.

Washing detergent is another problem and so it would help to know if you have changed the type of detergent that you usually use or not. If so then that is likely to be the cause of the genital acne problem.

Generally keeping the genital area as clean and as dry as you possibly can would be a big help. This means using something such as an antibacterial cleanser and changing your underwear if it gets too sweaty. It would be better to wear comfortable, cotton underwear as other materials can cause problems with sweat. To help to keep the area really clean and free from infection, you could always ask your doctor about oral treatments which may be available.

Another important tip to remember is to ensure that you do not squeeze or touch your pimples. That can cause them to spread and that will only make the problem worse instead of better.

Overall the worst mistake which many people make with their treatments is that they do not give them enough time to work. This means that they stop the treatment, feeling frustrated and the problem still persists. So ensure that you give whatever treatment you use, plenty of time to do its job. Do not expect results overnight — if anything it usually takes at least a couple of months to notice any results.
