Taking A Stand For Stevia
By Acne Free | September 26, 2007
Many of us who are subject to acne breakouts have noticed a connection between sugar and acne. I know that keeping my sugar intake in check is critical for me staying clear.
But in moments of weakness even the thought of pimples is not enough to keep me away from sweets. This is especially true during holidays when platters of cookies and baked goods seem to be at arms length no matter where I go.
To satisfy your sweet tooth most people believe there’s 2 options - sugar and artificial sweeteners. Sugar we already know is bad for us, and judging from the bad news that keeps surfacing about the side effects of artificial sweetener I’m not to keen on putting any of those in my body either.
The good news is there’s a third option, but most people never heard of it because of actions taken by the FDA. It’s called stevia.
Stevia is a readily available herb that also goes by the names sweetleaf, sweet leaf, sugarleaf. Stevia extract is 300 times sweeter then sugar, and it has zero calories. The fact that this herb has no calories and is all natural would seem to make it a natural choice as an alternative to sugar, but every attempt to get the stevia extract on store shelves next to sugar has been met with red tape and bureaucratic road blocks by the FDA.
Actions taken by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) prevent stevia from being sold as a sweetener. They claim it is a dangerous product citing studies that claim the herb is toxic.
Stevia is a lot like sugar. It is all natural and sweet, but unlike sugar, stevia has no calories and new research shows stevia to be safe for diabetics. With so many benefits it lead one website owner to question whether or not Americans should be allowed to choose stevia over sugar and artificial sweeteners when they are grocery shopping.
If you want to try stevia you’ll have to order it online or go to a health food store and look for it in the supplement section because stevia can only be sold as a “dietary supplement”.
